Mother of two pleads guilty to drug charge

A mother of two will know her fate today after she smuggled ganja into a correctional facility.

Hillary Atterbury, from Kingston, pleaded guilty with explanation to breaching the Correctional Act when she appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

It is alleged that while visiting her incarcerated son, she attempted to smuggle marijuana to him in a container with stewed chicken.

Atterbury, who admitted to bringing the contraband into the facility, said she was not aware of its presence, as she was not the person who prepared the food.

"I am guilty of taking it, but I didn't know it was there. Is when I go to the police station them tell me. I didn't have anything to take to him to eat, is his friend give me the food to give him," she said.

She said she has been trying to get in contact with the friend, but to no avail.

When asked by RM Judith Pusey why she shouldn't go to prison, she responded: "I am the only person he has, I have a 17-year-old daughter to look after, I didn't know it was there."

RM Pusey ordered that she returns to court today for sentencing.
