Man remanded for attempting extortion

A 26-year-old man accused of extorting money from a woman over the phone was remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Omar Gray, from St Catherine, has been charged with extortion and returns to court on February 7, at which time a social-enquiry report will be read.

Allegations are that Gray called the complainant on numerous occasions making advances towards her. In an attempt to stop the calls, the complainant told Gray that she would have her boyfriend answer the phone to defend her.

After a series of calls, it is alleged that Gray eventually issued threats to the complainant claiming to know the location of her home and demanded $100,000 not to kill her.

The police took Gray into custody after he was found waiting at the arranged location for the money. Gray pleaded guilty.

Resident Magistrate Lorna Shelly-Williams ordered him remanded until today for sentencing.
