Three held for ganja remanded

Three men who were held with ganja weighing almost 100 pounds (45 kilograms) were remanded when they appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Orville Thorpe, 47; Oraine Benneth, 31, and Dwayne Simms 31-year-old, all vegetable farmers, of Slipe, St Elizabeth, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to transport ganja, possession of and dealing in ganja.

Attorney-at-Law Carl Miller, in applying for bail, told the court two of his clients have previous convictions.

fined last year

He added that in the case of Benneth, he was fined last year for possession of ganja, and that Thorpe was convicted in 1992 for wounding.

Bail was denied after Clerk of Court Nicole Kellier told the court that the accused men's addresses were yet to be ascertained.

Resident Magistrate Dunbar-Green then ordered they be remanded to facilitate further the investigation.

Allegations are that on January 6, a police party was on patrol in Hill Run. The three men were reportedly spotted in a car which sped off. It was intercepted and the police searched and found eight plastic bags containing ganja weighing 98 pounds (44.5 kilograms).

They were subsequently charged.

They are scheduled to reappear on February 18.
