Councillor for the Beecher Town division in St Ann, Ian Bell, has dismissed claims by residents in his division that the roads running through the community are intentionally left in a deplorable state as a means of entertaining tourists.

Recently, residents of Epworth, located in the division, told THE STAR that their road has been in a state of disrepair for years, and allege it is left that way as a tour ride for tourists.

"They tell the tourists that they are going on tour rides and you can see that the tourists are enjoying themselves, because the road rocky and bumpy and they bounce around, so that's why they haven't fixed it," residents said.

But Bell stated: "It's nonsense! I have no knowledge or information of that, I do know that the road is used by tour guides to transport tourists to Nine Miles and other areas."

While acknowledging that the road is deplorable, Bell said a lack of funds is the reason repairs have not yet started on the over six-mile long road.

"Finances are the main problem. As we speak, I have asked for an estimate to rehabilitate the road and it is estimated to cost $43 million."

He said he cannot provide a timeline as to when repairs will commence, but has intentions of seeking assistance from China Harbour Engineering Company as soon as his comprehensive report on the cost of fixing the road is complete.
