High-powered weapons, ammo seized in Westmoreland

Two high-powered weapons and 351 rounds of ammunition were seized by a team from the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division during follow-up operations in Big Bridge, Westmoreland, on Tuesday night.

The weapons - a Beretta 40-calibre rifle and a Fal 7.62 rifle-were seized during a four-hour-long operation which commenced about 6 p.m. Also seized were:

Seventy-seven .357 cartridges

Sixty-nine 9mm cartridges

Fifty-four .40 cartridges

Two 12-gauge cartridges

Five .45 cartridges

Ninety 7.62 cartridges

Forty-three 5.56 cartridges

Eleven .380 cartridges

Eight assorted magazines

Westmoreland has been the scene of two other seizures since the start of this week. More than 2,800 pounds of ganja, two firearms, and 13 assorted rounds of ammunition were seized during operations in Big Bridge and Ketto district in the parish on Monday, January 13 and yesterday, January 14. Eleven persons, including five Costa Ricans were arrested. They remain in custody as detectives make arrangements for them to be questioned in the presence of their attorneys.
