Accused wife beater fined for assault

A man who is accused of beating his wife was fined $10,000 or ordered to serve six months' imprisonment in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

A line from Tarrus Riley's song, 'Start A New', was also quoted to him.

Charged with assault occasioning bodily harm is Stephen Symister.

an argument

The court heard that on the day of the incident, Symister telephoned his wife whose phone was answered by another man. It is alleged that the man told Symister that his wife had been saying bad things about him. Eventually, an argument would later develop between herself and Symister resulting in him beating her.

The accused told Senior Resident Magistrate (RM) Judith Pusey that it was his wife who had hit him; how-ever, she told the RM that she didn't.

The RM then told Symister that it was because the man had his wife's phone that angered him. The RM then quoted a line from Tarrus Riley's song stating, 'Beat you, Beat you... abuse and mistreat you.'

He was subsequently ordered to pay the fine.
