Man remanded for cocaine in luggage

A man alleged to be in possession of cocaine was remanded in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Charged with possession of, dealing in, conspiracy to import, and importing cocaine is Robert Clarke of a Kingston 14 address.

The Crown is alleging that the accused arrived in Jamaica at the Norman Manley International Airport on a Fly Jamaica flight when he was stopped and his luggage searched.

His suitcase was found to contain nine pairs of sneakers and a pair of slippers, which allegedly had a white powdery substance resembling cocaine. The substance weighed five pounds, seven ounces (2.6 kilograms) and was concealed in the soles.

It was also revealed that the accused left to go abroad without the knowledge of his parents, who had filed a missing persons report.

A probation report was subsequently ordered by Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey. Clarke is to return to court on February 9.
