Man on arson rap to face court again

The matter involving a 19-year-old man who is accused of setting his mother's house on fire was again mentioned in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Charged with arson is Richard Foster, who returns to court on February 7.

Allegations are that on the day of the incident, Foster and his mother got into an argument and she later saw smoke coming from her son's room. It is alleged that checks made revealed that Foster had set his bed ablaze.

The matter was reported to the police and Foster was subsequently arrested.

Foster, who hasn't denied the allegations told the court that he is ready to change over his life, and he believes that the devil is giving him a fight.

lengthy lecture

"Mi tired fi di devil a laugh after me. A time mi fi laugh after di devil. Di devil send mi mada to conquer me," Foster told Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey, who gave the accused a lengthy lecture before remanding him.

It was revealed that the accused is plagued with behavioural problems that his mother is having a difficult time handling.

During the hearing, RM Judith Pusey stood down the matter for a probation officer to speak briefly with the accused, to find out if he was willing to accept the help that he needs to behave better.

After a brief session with the probation officer, the court was later told that Foster said he was hearing voices in his head.

The matter is now awaiting a report from a psychiatrist to find out if Foster has a mental problem.
