Orange thief gets two-year sentence
Rasbert Turner, STAR Writer

A St Catherine resident, who was held three months ago in an orange orchard, was sentenced to two years' hard labour in the Linstead Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.

He is George Black, 'City Light', a 36-year-old labourer of Linstead.

When Black appeared before Resident Magistrate Marcia Dunbar-Green, it was revealed that he had a previous conviction for the theft of oranges. He was subsequently given the maximum sentence by the court.

The Crown led evidence that in October last year, the accused was caught picking oranges on the property of Trade Winds Farms, near Linstead. When he was accosted by security personnel, he ran away leaving his slippers and shirt behind.

These items were tendered as evidence during the trial. The clerk of court was Nicole Kellier.
