Irate customer causes chaos in tax office

Chaos reigned at the Spanish Town tax office in St Catherine on Monday when an irate customer started throwing chairs forcing people to run for cover. One person was injured during the melee.

The incident unfolded about 10.30 a.m. in the jam-packed office.

The female customer was later chased and restrained by security personnel on the compound.

Reports said the woman complained of being deprived of one month's grace period for her motor vehicle. It is understood that she hurled expletives at employees and was asked to desist. She became angry and started throwing chairs.

A visible shaken worker told THE STAR: "I was at the counter dealing with taxpayers when I heard the female started to use expletives. She then threatened to use the chair and hit somebody and she started throwing them about hitting a woman on her back and leg. She ran after another woman who was 'videoing' the incident."

The injured woman had to seek medical attention. The customer was later charged with assault occasioning bodily harm by the Central Village police. She appears in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on March 11.
