Alley Cat upbeat about album

Imperial, formerly called Alley Cat. - File

Veteran artiste and producer, Imperial, formerly known as Alley Cat, has returned to Jamaica after a lengthy stay in the United States to promote a new album called Dancehall Knowledge Volume 3.

The artiste, who had hits in the 1990s such as Why and Hot Gal on the Stink rhythm, Fresh Off the Block on the classic Joyride rhythm, and Brag and Boast, says Dancehall Knowledge Volume 3 is designed to school the new generation of deejays.

The 15-track album is self-produced by his label, Imperial productions, and has no collaborations.

"Dancehall nowadays sounds the same. Every artiste is singing the same thing and the content is poor. It's not like the '90s, so this album is to show them that there is more to dancehall music than just slackness," Imperial said.

The artiste is now preparing to embark on a local promotional campaign which he hopes will reconnect him with his Jamaican fans, as well as draw attention to his latest projects.

Imperial has also signed a record deal with US-based record label UAA, Music and is already performing at shows in collaboration with the label.

The veteran released three albums prior to this effort. However, he feels that this project is his best yet. The artiste says the album has a message which is reminiscent of the glory days of dancehall music, carrying strong social commentary.

The album has already been released digitally and can be purchased on Rhapsody, iTunes, Amazon among other online outlets.

The physical version of the project, however, will not be released until he is ready to embark on his 2014 international tour.

Imperial says it is easier to sell albums on tour than to rely on the record shops. Videos have already been filmed and released for the album's lead tracks, Real Ghetto Story and Opportunity.
