Evelyn Smith, a 99-year-old war veteran, was the center of attention at Curphey Place, St Andrew, recently, as telecommunications company Digicel celebrated her longevity, as well, as the courage she showed in representing her country.

The celebrations are a part of the company's recently launched #JamaicaHappy Movement.

She was honoured with a veteran's lunch held at Curphey Place, put on by the company, as well as a beautiful floral arrangement. Smith, whose spunk belies her age, was pleased to be surrounded by her fellow vets who lined up just to say hello.

Evelyn served Jamaica as a nurse during World War II where she tended to the injured soldiers at George 5th, later renamed Chest Hospital and also at a hospital in the Cayman Islands. Despite the terror of war, Evelyn did remember there being happy times.

I had a good time in the military, I was happy to be taking care of the soldiers," she recalls with a smile. She also reminisced about the pompous parades which she often participated in.

The veteran's luncheon was not the only activity for the day. Digicel also made a donation of $100,000 in cash and kind to the vets living at Curphey Home in Manchester. Important items such as medicine and groceries were also a part of the donation.

Tahnida Nunes, senior sponsorship manager at Digicel, said, "This luncheon and donation is a part of our #JamaicaHappy Movement, where it is our intention to insert a little 'happy' in Jamaicans' lives by showing random acts of kindness. It was only right that we started with Miss Smith and her fellow war vets, whose courage is certainly something to be happy about."
