Detectives at the May Pen Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) seized 500 pounds of compressed ganja in the Exeter area of Vere, Clarendon, on the weekend moments before the drug was to be picked up by Haitians in a waiting boat that sped off on approach of the police.

The lawmen, who were on an operation in the coastal area of Clarendon, discovered the contraband on Beecham's Beach hidden behind a shed about 11 p.m. on Saturday.

"While conducting an operation in the coastal area of Clarendon, we discovered the compressed ganja. There was also a boat with four men aboard, however, on seeing the police, they sped off," a senior detective at the May Pen CIB told THE STAR.

"The police suspect that the men are Haitians because they were speaking in a French Creole language, however, we cannot at this time say definitely that the operation was linked to the guns-for-drugs trade, but it is highly likely that it was," the senior detective added.

According to the lawmen, Saturday night's ganja find was the biggest drug bust in Clarendon since the start of the year.
