Con artist charged in employment scam

Con artist Horace Omar Haughton pleaded guilty on five counts of fraud-related charges in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court recently.

Haughton, who also goes by the name Garcia Perez, is to return to court on April 3 for sentencing.

The accused told the court that his correct name was Horace Omar Haughton and he had a problem with substance abuse. It was revealed in court that the accused had 53 similar convictions.

Despite seeing his records, a concerned resident magistrate, Simone Wolfe-Reece, decided not to sentence Perez as she was taken aback by the fact that he had already been sentenced on several occasions for fraud.

Wolfe-Reece said that the accused had an obvious problem.

Haughton was accused of fleecing thousands of dollars from individuals under the pretence that he could provide employment for them.

The police told the court that other charges were to be laid against the accused.
