Manchester businessman killed, man in custody
GEORGE HENRY, STAR Writer

A Manchester man is dead while another is in police custody on a murder charge, following an incident at Mile Gully in that parish on Sunday.

Dead is Robin Jones, a 46-year-old businessman of Mile Gully, while in the custody of the Manchester police is George Cockett, who is said to be in his early 40s.

According to reports reaching THE STAR, Cockett went to a bar operated by Jones on Sunday and asked a bartender to credit him a drink of rum. It was said that he was told by the bartender that her boss (Jones) had instructed her some time ago not to credit Cockett anything because a stocktaking done some time ago, showed a shortage of money for goods which was credited to Cockett.

Cockett reportedly became upset and left the bar, but returned later and saw Jones taking things from the trunk of his car. The police said Jones was attacked from behind with a machete. Jones was chopped several times in his head, and had to be rushed to the Mandeville Hospital for treatment.

He was later transferred to the Kingston Public Hospital, suffering from severe brain injury. He was, however, unable to recover from the injury and died on Monday night. The Manchester police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
