Dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel was the second most trending topic in the world yesterday on social media networks, as news broke that the controversial deejay was to serve 35 years behind bars before he becomes eligible for parole.

A trend on social network refers to a hash tag-driven topic that is immediately popular at a particular time. Trends are determined by an algorithm that monitors hot subjects based on who you follow and where you're located.

The only topic which trended more than Vybz Kartel was #throwbackthursday, while those below Vybz Kartel's were #Forthood James Franco, #ASOT657, #Survivor, #Nashville among others.

The deejay along with his three co-accused convicted for the murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams, were each given life sentence by Justice Lennox Campbell.

Fans of the deejay also took to the Free Vybz Kartel Facebook page to vent about the sentencing, many crying foul.

"Addi get more time than Dudus, so funny," a viewer commented, while another said "Promising young men who chose the wrong path ... now their lives just gone down the drain."
