Accused remanded for stealing car

A St James man who is charged with the theft of a 2006 Honda Civic motor car was remanded when he appeared in the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court.

He is Herdley Vernon of Latium, St James.

The court heard that on March 26, about 11 p.m., the owner parked his motor vehicle at his house in Portmore. He awoke to hear the engine throttling and saw a man slowly driving the vehicle away.

The vehicle was never seen again until Vernon was spotted at his gate. He is said to have behaved in a suspicious manner on the approach of a police party.

Vernon was accosted and during a search of his premises the vehicle was seen with new licence plates. A further search revealed the original plates.

He was then charged with larceny of motor vehicle.

His lawyer, Shanon Clarke, did not receive any favourable comments from the judge when she applied for bail.

The matter is scheduled to be heard on May 20.
