Man sentenced for attempting to smuggle ganja

A man nabbed at the Norman Manley International Airport, attempting to smuggle a quantity of ganja, out of the island, was sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

He is 25-year-old Theodore Brown, who pleaded guilty to possession of, dealing in, conspiracy to export, and taking steps preparatory to export ganja charges.

The court heard that on the day in question, Brown, before boarding a Caribbean Airlines flight to Trinidad, was found to have 14.5 pounds of ganja in his luggage.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey ordered the man to pay a fine of $15,000 or serve six months for possession of ganja; pay $46,400 or serve six months for dealing in ganja; pay $116,000 or serve six months for taking steps to export ganja; and ordered to serve 18 months in prison to run concurrently and consecutively.
