A Jamaican national was last Tuesday arrested near Malone, New York, for being an illegal alien in the United States.

He is Steve Mark Ellis, charged by United States Border Patrol agents with re-entry of a deported alien.

The Watertown Daily Times reported that Ellis was arrested subsequent to officers stopping the motor vehicle he was travelling in on Route 122, a state highway in northern Franklin County, New York. For reasons unknown, lawmen conducted an immigration inspection of the vehicle's occupants. Ellis, who was unable to produce any documents, reportedly claimed to be a citizen of the United States, born in Manhattan, agents said.

According to a criminal complaint filed in US District Court, Plattsburgh, New York, checks of immigration records revealed that Ellis is a Jamaican citizen who had been physically removed from the United States via Miami, Florida, in December 1995.

He was ordered detained in US marshals' custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for May 6.
