Man fined for hitting babymother with board

Bjorn Burke, Staff Reporter

A man accused of using a board to hit his babymother, was ordered to pay a fine or serve six months. He appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Twenty-year-old Juvaine Barnett pleaded guilty to the unlawful-wounding charge.

The court heard that, on the day in question, the accused and the complainant got into an argument, resulting in Barnett using a board to hit her across her back, causing wounds.

Explaining the circumstances surrounding the incident, Barnett told Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey his babymother was confrontational and started to "wild up", but he acted out of "ignorancy".

"Is a $10,000 ignorance this, or six months," RM Pusey replied.

The magistrate ordered the man to pay a fine of $10,000 or serve six months in prison.
