$90 million worth of cocaine seized

The Jamaica Customs Agency says 30 packages containing 72 pounds (32.72 kilograms) of cocaine with an estimated street value of US$82,000 (J$90 million) were seized on a vessel arriving from Colombia on Tuesday.

No arrests have so far been made in connection to the seizure.

According to the agency, the seizure resulted from a joint operation at about 8:20 p.m., by the Contraband Enforcement Team of the Jamaica Customs, the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) Coast Guard and the Transnational Crime and Narcotics Division (TCND) and Marine police of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

It is reported that upon inspection of one of the containers on board the vessel, a bag was discovered with 30 rectangular packages, the agency said in its report.

Inspection of the packages revealed that they contained a white powdery substance and subsequent testing confirmed that it was cocaine.
