Three men to appear in court on gun charges

Three men are to appear in the Mandeville Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday to answer to charges stemming from breaches of the Firearms and Dangerous Drugs acts.

Charged for illegal possession of, dealing in and trafficking in ganja are Athlone Francis, 29, a welder; Dwayne Johnson, 30, a musician; and 29-year-old Dwight Rose, a construction worker, all from Goshen district, St Elizabeth. Rose is also charged with illegal possession of ammunition.

The three were arrested during an operation on the Berriedale main road in Porus, Manchester, on Friday. Police said about 11 a.m., a Toyota motor car with three men aboard was stopped. The men and the vehicle were subsequently searched.

Ten .38 cartridges were taken from one of the men, while several parcels of compressed ganja wrapped in masking tape were found inside the car.

Meanwhile, also on Friday, police in St James seized two guns, a quantity of ammunition and illegal drugs during an operation in Flankers in the parish.

Information received is that the operation was carried out between 5:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. in Red Dirt district in the community.

Police said during the operation several premises were searched. One Glock .40 pistol, one Llama 9mm pistol, one ballistic vest, 82 assorted rounds of ammunition, one and a half pounds of compressed ganja and 171 packaged parcels of ganja were seized.

Several persons, including a female, have been taken into custody in connection with the find. However, their identities are being withheld pending further investigations.
