Mom, daughters remanded for murder

A street brawl which turned deadly resulted in a mother and her two daughters being denied bail when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Monday.

Charged with murder and conspiracy to murder are 41-year-old Stephany Hall-Beckford, Garfiesha Smith, 21, and Vanique Smith, 22, all from Kingston 10.

It is alleged that on April 23, around 5 p.m., the accused women were involved in a dispute with the now deceased. The police went to the location to bring some calm to the situation and during mediation, the now deceased went inside her house and returned with a bottle with a liquid substance and a ratchet knife.

According to reports, the police disarmed the now deceased and the accused women allegedly attacked her in the presence of the police.

Garfeisha Smith was accused of using a knife to stab her in the chest. She was rushed to the Kingston Public Hospital, where she died.

After the allegations were read, Beckford told the court that she was not present at the time the now deceased was injured, but instead was at home washing off the liquid substance which she thought was acid, that was tossed on her.

"The deceased throw acid pan me, suh mi run go to mi house to wash off, while me inna mi bathroom me hear three gunshot suh mi run out and see the police ah hold the girl ah seh she dead. Mi never stab her your honour, the police know is who and naa talk," she said.

Garfeisha told the court that she is not guilty of the offence and also stated that the police know the real culprit, but are withholding the information.

The mother and her two daughters were denied bail and are to return to court for mention on June 10.
