Woman fined for attacking alleged lesbian

A fine of $10,000 or a prison term of six months were the options open to a woman in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court last Wednesday, who allegedly assaulted another woman and accused her of being a lesbian.

Charged with assault occasioning bodily harm is Simone Graham.

The court heard that on the day of the incident, Graham and the complainant were involved in an altercation, which resulted in the accused using sticks and stones to hit the complainant.

In another incident, the accused is alleged to have thrown a stone, which hit the complainant on her left leg.

The court heard from the accused that the complainant is a lesbian and has been spreading rumours that they have a thing going.

The accused claimed that at one point the woman told her, "mi waan beat up that body deh," which brought laughter to the court.

The accused also alleged that the complainant touched her suggestively on three different occasions.

The complainant then responded, "If I offended you by saying hi, I apologise," which also brought laughter.

The accused was subsequently ordered to pay the fine or serve the prison term.
