Man found in New Kingston office fined

A frivolous escapade resulted in a man being fined $10,000 when he appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Charged with possession of ganja and breaking and entering an office is Dwayne Heron of a Kingston address.

It is alleged that on May 5 about 6:30 a.m., the accused was found sleeping in a washroom located on Haining Road, New Kingston.

The police were alerted and Heron was arrested and charged, two ounces of ganja was also found in his possession.

Heron immediately pleaded guilty to the possession of ganja charge, but denied breaking into the premises. He told the court that he simply fell asleep after he was brought to the building by a woman he met at a club.

"I went by Palais Royale in New Kingston. I met a girl and had a little too much to drink, we took a taxi and she said that we were going to her apartment around 4:30 a.m. I was very intoxicated and end up falling asleep in somebody's place," he told the court.

After hearing his explanation, Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey cleared Heron of the breaking and entering charge but instead charged him with criminal trespassing to which he pleaded guilty.

"I just fall asleep, Your Honour. It was very careless of me. If I had known about my whereabouts, I would not have gone," he said to which RM Pusey responded, "You were too happy!"

Heron was fined $10,000 or six months in prison for the criminal trespassing charge, and $200 for the possession of ganja.
