Woman fined for stealing Magnum Tonic wine

Rasbert Turner, STAR Writer

A woman who pleaded guilty to the theft of four bottles of Magnum Tonic wine was made $10,000 poorer for her efforts.

She is Janet Thomas, a resident of Spanish Town in St Catherine.

When Thomas appeared before the Spanish Town Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, she pleaded guilty to stealing the tonic.

30 days' imprisonment

Resident Magistrate Natalee Brooks then ordered her to pay a fine of $10,000 or serve 30 days' imprisonment at hard labour.

The court heard that on May 5, the accused went inside the Shop and Save Supermarket in the St Jago Shopping Centre in the Old Capital.

It is alleged that she picked up the wines, placed them inside her handbag and attempted to leave the building, but was stopped and searched by security personnel.

The police were called in and she was subsequently arrested and charged with simple larceny.
