A family has been plunged into mourning following the stabbing death of a 14-year-old girl by a 17-year-old girl in Granville, St James, in a heated fight allegedly over a man.

The deceased has been identified as Ashley Morris of Santoy, Hanover.

It has been reported that about 10:30 p.m. on Monday night, a fight developed between the two females, which resulted in a knife allegedly being used by the 17-year-old to stab the 14-year-old in the neck.

Morris was rushed to hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The 17-year-old was taken into custody where it is expected that she will be questioned in the presence of relatives and her attorney.

A relative of the deceased said she had been hearing conflicting reports of the incident.

"I don't know anything. I only know that she is dead. I heard she was fighting, I heard self-defence. I don't know how to put it. I heard it was man they were fighting over. Now I hearing is over something different. I heard that it was the man who had called his girl to come and beat her [Ashley]," she said, while pointing out that Morris did not like to be corrected when she was at fault.

The relative also pointed out that Morris allegedly used an object to hit the 17-year-old before she was stabbed.

An administrator at the Maldon High School, where the 17- year-old attends, pointed out that the incident was an unfortunate one, and that the school community was mourning for both children.
