Five on robbery charges found guilty

Five men arrested and charged with illegal possession of firearm and robbery with aggravation, were found guilty when they appeared before Justice Jennifer Straw in the Corporate Area Supreme Court on Monday.

Jeshawn Nugent, Oneil Shaw, Fabian Bennett, Oneil Miller and Dean Talbert were found guilty.

The men, all affiliated with the 'Jungle 12' gang in August Town, St Andrew, were involved in an incident in March 2012, in August Town.

The complainant was brutally assaulted by the men. The men were later arrested, charged and brought before the court for trial, which commenced in March.

Deputy commissioner of police (DCP) in charge of crime, Carl Williams, has extended commendations to the team of officers and prosecutors from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

"The work that was done by the police and the prosecutors is a demonstration of excellent investigative skills, resilience and professionalism," he stated.

DCP Williams also commented on the impact the convictions could have on the criminal underworld.

"We have not only been investing, significantly, in improving the investigative capacity of our members, but remain committed to ensuring the safety of citizens by the disrupting and dismantling of criminal networks and their illicit activities. This is certainly another dent in gang feuds and related activities, which account for over 70 per cent of major crimes in Jamaica."

The men will be sentenced on June 20.
