Man gets 30 days for using uncle's JUTC card

A man who said he used his uncle's Jamaica Urban Transit company's smart card by error was made an example of and sentenced to 30 days in prison when he appeared in Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court Thursday.

Robert Henderson, who pleaded guilty, was facing obtaining credit by fraud and making a false declaration charges.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey said that she would make an example of Henderson because he was exploiting the discounted bus fare for senior citizens.

Allegations are that on May 22, the accused used the bus card that belonged to a relative, who is a senior citizen, on a JUTC bus.

The court heard that when Henderson was questioned about the card, he told representatives from the bus company that the card belonged to him.

However, further enquiries revealed that the card did not belong to him.

Senior citizens are given a discounted rate on bus fares.

"It's jus' a mistake, your honour, because I was rushing to go to the market. Please, my lady, it's just a big mistake," the accused said.

Henderson also told the court that he owns a similar card; however, when RM Pusey stood down the matter to see if the accused was being truthful, word came back after checks with JUTC that the accused had received the card on the day he was accosted.

"Too crazy man!, This is not as simple as it looks, enuh. I want people to know that JUTC must survive," RM Pusey said.
