Man behind bars for stealing Lychee

A 20-year-old Clarendon man is now behind bars for stealing lychee from at least two properties in that parish.

In police custody is Rayan 'Tubby' Henry from Henry Street in Sanguinetti.

Reports said police, acting on information, went to Spaldings in the parish where Henry was observed as the only passenger in a blue Honda Integra motor car, which was being operated as a taxi.

Henry was removed from the vehicle and a dark-blue travelling bag containing about 35 pounds of lychee, said to value $15,000, was found in the car during a search.

He was questioned as to how he came in possession of the fruit, and he reportedly told the police that he purchased them from a man driving a red pickup truck about 2 p.m. the previous day in the square of White Shop, close to where he resides in Clarendon.

The police reportedly made checks in White Shop where several persons were spoken to and no one was able to support the suspect's claim that a pickup was selling lychee in that area. Further investigations revealed that lychee was reported stolen from the trees of two residents living in the Sanguinetti district.

The accused was brought before the Christiana RM Court last week and was remanded by the resident magistrate. He is to return to court later this month to answer to the charge of unlawful possession of property.
