Rasbert Turner, STAR Writer

A St Elizabeth businessman succumbed to injuries he received in a three-vehicle collision along Highway 2000 in St Catherine yesterday.

He has been identified as Dwayne Powell of Junction district.

Reports are that about 3:30 p.m., Powell was driving a Nissan Skyline motor car along the road near the Vineyard Toll Plaza when his vehicle collided with the rear of a Hiace minibus, heading in the same direction.

The driver of the bus lost control, slammed into a median and collided with a Suzuki Vitara.

The impact caused extensive damage to all three vehicles.

The accident required the assistance of the fire department to extract a number of injured persons from the minibus, and also Powell who was pronounced dead on the spot.

Police investigators told THE STAR that the accident is due primarily to poor visibility caused by smoke, which was coming from an area near the road, and also speeding on the part of the deceased

Traffic was brought to a standstill as a section of the road was blocked off.

Police personnel carried out initial investigation as to the cause of the accident, while the Old Harbour police in St Catherine is conducting a further probe.

Meanwhile, THE STAR learnt that about five persons remain hospitalised with varying degrees of injuries received from the collision.
