Men fined for stealing cleaning agents

Two men, accused of stealing quantities of cleaning agents from a businessman, were each fined $50,000 in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.

Charged with simple larceny are Anthony Robinson and Jason Ashmeade. Ashmeade was also charged with possession of an offensive weapon.

The Crown alleges that, Robinson and Ashmeade allegedly stole floor polish, dishwashing liquid, fabric softener and bleach, along with two boat engines. The items are reportedly valued at $321,500.

The attorney representing both men urged Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey to be lenient and grant a non-custodial sentence.

"They have accepted responsibility for what has transpired. They have never been in trouble with the law," he said.

However, Pusey expressed a different view, arguing that the men should be sent to prison.

"They are a number of small businesses struggling to survive, and they chose to pilfer. They must feel the sweet taste of the law," she said.

The RM fined both men and ordered that Ashmeade pay $4,000 for possession of a knife.
