Farmers suffer from bush fire

Several farmers in Cheapside St Elizabeth are counting their losses following another massive bush fire on Monday.

It is reported that about 50 acres of farmlands went up in flames, destroying fruit trees and crops.

This is the second fire in the area in recent days.

On Saturday, a massive fire destroyed hundreds of acres of farmlands in Malvern, also in the parish, and damaged property as well as farm supplies.

On Sunday, several other fires occurred in the parish.

Farmers are being warned against the use of the slash-and-burn method to clear farmland.

The Jamaica Agricultural Society is to embark on a public education campaign to alert farmers to dangerous methods in farming.
