Girlfriend abused for sporting hickey

A man who admitted to kicking his girlfriend because she was sporting a hickey was fined $10,000 yesterday in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court, though the complainant requested that the matter go no further. Charged with assault is 25-year-old Shane Simpson.

He pleaded guilty to the offence.

Senior Resident magistrate Judith Pusey asked Simpson, "What did you do to her?"

"I kicked her," Simpson replied.

The court was told that Simpson assaulted the complainant because a man from Spanish Town gave her a hickey.

RM Pusey said, "You are not getting away if you had hit her, but not the kick."

The complainant at this point requested that the case be dropped, however, Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey was not so willing.

RM Pusey said, "Since she don't want anything, I am gonna take it and give it to the Government and people of Jamaica."

Simpson was fined $10,000 or six months' imprisonment.
