Sneakers used to hide coke

A vendor who was hauled before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court after two pounds (900 grams) of cocaine was found concealed in a secret compartment inside a pair of brown Nike sneakers within his luggage, had his bail denied last Friday.

Charged with possession, dealing and taking steps to export the drug is 36-year-old Derrick Shand.

He did not enter a plea as his attorney advised the court that she would withhold a plea until the certificate from the lab was available.

Senior Resident Magistrate Judith Pusey then told the attorney that the bail can wait also.

The court was told that Shand was held at the airport after an irregularity was unearthed by airport officials. Shand's luggage was scanned and the police were notified.

On closer observation, a pair of brown Nike sneakers in his bag contained two rectangular parcels of cocaine, one in each sole of the shoe. The drug weighed two pounds in total.

The court heard that when Shand was cautioned he said, "Officer, mek mi level wid yuh, is a likkle ting me do."

Shand returns to court on August 15, and a fingerprint order was made.
