Addict's case sent to drug court

A man who alleges he is a drug addict, accused of stealing a single bag of cement, had his matter transferred to the Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Court when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Charged with simple larceny is Garfield Francis.

Allegations are that on the day of the incident, Francis is believed to have removed a brand new bag of cement from an establishment.

He was later accosted, arrested, and charged by police officers who found the item in his possession.

At the start of the proceedings, Francis begged of Resident Magistrate (RM) Georgiana Fraser for leniency, as he needed assistance with his drug addiction.

The court heard that Francis is believed to be addicted to cocaine, and took the bag of cement to support his habit.

Subsequently, RM Fraser ordered Francis to appear before the drug court where the matter will be transferred on August 13, at which point the magistrate will consider bail, possibly admitting him to a treatment programme.
