Accused child beater gets bail extension

A man accused of savagely beating his child had his bail extended when he appeared before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court last Friday.

Charged with cruelty to a child is Evon McDermott.

"So you beat the child to the point where the child was injured, Sir?" Resident Magistrate (RM) Georgiana Fraser probed.

"I beat her, Your Honour, but I never injure her," McDermott replied.

The child's mother, who is McDermott's babymother, shared with the court that "He (McDermott) constantly keep coming and calling her from out the house."

This seemingly irked the sitting magistrate who chided the accused man.

"Did I not tell you that you shouldn't have any contact with the pickney?" she reproved. "You, Sir. If you want to lose your bail and your freedom then you go back to that house! Do not go back to that place! Do you hear me?"

Subsequently, McDermott had his bail extended until August 21 when he is to reappear for a mention hearing.
