Jamaicans fined for smuggling ganja to Barbados

Two Jamaicans who were arrested at the Grantley Adams International Airport in Barbados fined when they appeared in the Oistins Magistrate's Court on Thursday.

Charged are 23-year-old Tyrone Jerome Taylor and 40-year-old Lance St Aubyn Barnes.

According to Caribbean Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Taylor arrived in Barbados from Jamaica two Saturdays ago and was interviewed by police after clearing immigration.

He was referred to a medical facility, where he passed out 47 packets of ganja weighing half pound.

When Taylor arrived before the court, he was ordered to pay BD$6,000 for the importation of ganja or spend 12 months in prison.

Barnes, who was facing similar charges, was fined BD$18,000 for importation of ganja or spend 18 months in prison.

According to CBC, Barnes also arrived in Barbados from Jamaica on July 21 and was interviewed by the police after clearing immigration.

He was also referred to a medical facility where he passed out 74 packets containing ganja which weighed one and half pounds.

Taylor and Barnes were convicted, reprimanded and discharged on the charges of possession, intent to supply and trafficking of ganja.
