St John Ambulance hosts back-to-school fair

At-risk and vulnerable children primarily from the Corporate Area will be the major beneficiaries of the St John Ambulance Back to School Health Fair to be staged at the Organisation's headquarters at 2e Camp Road in Kingston tomorrow.

The fair will afford them free health checks and screenings including vision screening, heart testing (echo cardiograms), heart disease (cholesterol), anaemia (haemoglobin), blood sugar and blood pressure testing, as well as weight management (body mass indexing,) and foot-care services. The health screenings are being made possible by the Chase and National Health funds, the Lions Club, the Heart Foundation and the Diabetes Association of Jamaica as well as St John Volunteers drawn from the health sector.

A major highlight will be an instructive and colourful opening ceremony featuring a First Aid and safety simulation demonstration/presentation by the Police and the Jamaica Fire Brigade focusing on a motor vehicle extrication and proper handling of the casualty. It will also feature a drill/marching display by the St John cadets who performed creditably at recent state and official events during the nation's recent Independence celebrations as well as the State Funeral for former Governor General and St John Jamaica National Council President, Sir Howard Cooke.

The fair will also feature fun-filled learning activities, including mentoring/reasoning hang-outs with members of St John which include the Police, the Fire Brigade and the Correctional Services. Children will also benefit from valuable life skills presentations on Road Safety, Managing Bullying and Peer Pressure and Oral Hygiene. They will also have the opportunity to participate in drills which will include marching, formations and taking salutes. Parents will be afforded the opportunity to participate in an interactive mini workshop on managing stress.
