Sound systems deliver at Red Stripe Beer Vibes

Mark Titus, Star Writer

Six sound systems from several parts of the world came together to produce an unforgettable night of entertainment at Red Stripe Beer Vibes, the ultimate dancehall event of the Smirnoff Dream Weekend party series at Wonderland in Negril, Westmoreland, recently.

Even though it was brought to an abrupt end by the police at 4 a.m., party lovers nonetheless remember the friendly musical banter between Jugglerz from Germany and the 'unruly' Tony Matterhorn.

Hosted by renowned selector Jazzy T, things got off to a steady start with early juggling from ever-popular Redd Heat and Portmore's Flava Unit. About 1:30 a.m., with patrons still pouring into an already jam-packed venue, each sound was given 20 minutes to play.

While the responses to the cautious presentations from Redd Heat, Flava Unit, and DJ Kentucky were reasonable, Unity from Japan, despite decades of experience on the dancehall scene, struggled and appeared clueless and out of his league as the demanding crowd called for more.

It was the Germans who came and took the vibe to another level, and from their intro to their mention of Tony Matterhorn, it was evident that Beer Vibes patrons were in for an exciting time.

Shotta Paul and DJ Meska had the crowd eating out of their hands as they showed off their knowledge of Jamaica, one boasting about his 13 baby mothers.

Matterhorn, however, showed who was more at home, opting to respond to the Germans in his comical and fun-filled set.

Foota Hype featured with Redd Heat to start off the 10-minute round but was not effective. Then came DJ Kentucky, who played a tight set and, managed to excite the venue with some smart selections, while the Flava Unit crew simply talked more than it played, but Unity was nowhere in sight.

Jugglerz returned and again went after Matterhorn, but before he got a chance to respond, the law enforcers pulled the plug on proceedings to the dismay of everyone.
