Bail extended for alleged thieves

Four teenagers, jointly charged with two adults, accused of breaking into a storeroom owned by a prominent lawyer, had their bails extended when they appeared in the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

Charged with store housebreaking is 29-year-old Godwin Morris of a Chestnut Lane, Kingston 14 address and Jovannie Thomas of a Bond Street, Kingston 14, address, along with four 17-year-old males, all of downtown Kingston addresses. With the exception of Morris who pleaded guilty, the five other co-accused pleaded not guilty to the offence.

Allegations are that on August 16, the complainant, who is employed as an overseer and watchman, supposedly witnessed the accused men jumping a fence securing the compound located along a section of Orange Street, downtown Kingston. It is said that the premises is owned by a well-known businessman and lawyer. It is believed that the members of the clan broke into the storeroom containing an assortment of items, inclusive of lighting and stage equipment.

It is alleged that a hole big enough to facilitate human entry was cut into a locked, thick metal shutter securing the building. Blood was reportedly seen on a section of the shutter in which the hole was cut out.

Upon arrest, the six accused were cautioned separately at the Fletcher's Land Police Station when Morris allegedly uttered, "a plum me go pick,"

During the proceeding, the Senior Resident Magistrate inquired about whether or not the accused persons should be charged with criminal trespassing rather than the current charge laid against them.

Subsequently, the sitting magistrate ordered the six accused to return to court on September 15 for a mention hearing. A fingerprint order was also made against Morris and Thomas, the two adults in the matter.
