Human kidneys grown inside pigs

Human kidneys have been grown inside pigs in a remarkable experiment.

It is the first time that scientists have been able to grow a 'humanised' organ inside another species, and they are now working on growing other organs - including hearts and pancreases - inside hogs.

The long-term aim of the research is to create organs that can be used in human transplants.

The team at Guangzhou Institutes of Biomedicine and Health decided to focus on kidneys, as they are one of the first organs to develop and are also the most commonly transplanted organ.

Professor Lai Liangxue said: "Rat organs have been produced in mice, and mouse organs have been produced in rats, but previous attempts to grow human organs in pigs have not succeeded.

"Our approach improves the integration of human cells into recipient tissues and allows us to grow human organs in pigs."

Cops mistake yoga class for mass murder

Police stormed into a yoga class after it was mistaken for a 'ritual mass murder'.

Members of the public noticed several people lying on the floor and reported it to the cops - with five cars descending on the North Sea Observatory in Chapel St Leonards, Lincolnshire, last week.

Lincolnshire police confirmed that everybody at the yoga class was safe and well, and that the call had been made with "good intentions".

Yoga teacher Millie Laws explained that she thought reports of her being a "mass murderer" were a "joke at first".

She told BBC News: "A couple with some dogs just came up to the window and were having a look in, but they walked off really quickly and I didn't think anything of it.

"I didn't know until after we left that these people phoned in, saying that there was a mass murderer; they were wearing a robe and they were walking all over all of the people; and it looked like some kind of ritual, and that the people on the floor were actually dead."

Laws added: "I guess from the outside view it could look like that, because they're all really still, very nice and relaxed.

"I'm sure their imagination was running wild with what was going on."
