St George's, St Jago in driver's seat

St George's College and St Jago are in the driver's seat after their opening Group J second round Group J ISSA-FLOW Manning Cup matches at the Spanish Town Prison Oval yesterday.

St George's put in another masterful performance to beat Haile Selassie 3-1 while St Jago High had to fight to the end to grab a late 2-1 win over Kingston College.

Favourites St George's came from behind to beat Haile Selassie. Jevoun McKellar (22nd), Alex Marshall (28th) and Gregory Messam Jr (68th) lifted the former champions after Akeem Morrison had fired Haile Seallsie in front after nine minutes.

In the day's feature match Hayden Street scored an 87th minute header to seal all three points for St Jago.

St Jago were early out of the blocks and 11 minutes into the game they were awarded a penalty after a hand ball inside the box. Ryan Smart converted from the spot. Six minutes later KC were on even terms when Javain Brown swept home a low cross.

Both teams fought tooth and nail for the three points and with three minutes to go, central defender Street headed home a long throw from Shawn Thompson to silence the KC supporters.

"When you play a team twice and it's a quality team, you are going to get these type of challenges," said St Jago coach Glen Laing. "But we are at home and we designed to score goals."
