Reggae Girlz clip Costa Rica in warm-up match

National senior women's football head coach Hubert Busby Jr says he was very pleased with the Reggae Girlz's execution after they clipped Costa Rica 1-0 in a closed-door scrimmage match in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, yesterday.

Drew Spence, who plies her trade for Chelsea in the English FA's Women's Super League (WSL), netted the all-important goal in the 81st minute. The match was a warm-up for both teams before they clash in a friendly international game on Sunday.

Busby Jr said the Reggae Girlz played well throughout the encounter and should have scored a lot more goals.

"I think it was a very positive performance from the team," said Busby Jr. "We had two training sessions prior to this game, we didn't really have a whole lot of chances to implement a lot of different things but what we did implement was executed," he said. "We started the game brightly on the front foot probably the first 20 minutes before the hydration break and could have probably been up 3-0.

He added that despite the fact that they allowed the Costa Ricans to dominate the possession in the second half, their defensive unit played well to keep them from scoring.

"I think that after the hydration break they were the better team, but we were good, very organised. Our backline played very well and our whole team shape was very good and I am very impressed with that," said Busby Jr.

"The second half we started to integrate some more players into the match, obviously some fresh legs, having six substitutions helped. We were able to bring on Bunny (Khadija Shaw), Drew Spence, Paige Bailey-Gayle and Sashana Campbell, I thought they really came on and helped that energy level and the tempo that we were playing at and so overall it was a good performance from the team," he said.

Meanwhile, Sunday's game is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. Jamaica time.
