Speid delighted after 1-0 win
Technical director of Cavalier, Rudolph Speid, says yesterday's 1-0 victory over Humble Lion in the Jamaica Premier League competition is a massive three points for his team in their quest to secure a spot in the play-offs of the tournament.
Cavalier, the defending champions, entered yesterday's encounter following two straight defeats to Waterhouse and Portmore United, respectively, in the competition.
However, striker Ronaldo Webster ended Cavalier's winless streak when he broke inside the 18-yard box to score in the 38th minute at the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence.
The victory lifted Cavalier from eighth to fourth spot in the standings with six points from four games.
Speid said he is delighted with his team's performance because they had to work very hard for the victory.
"It was hard work from us to get this victory," said Speid.
"I thought we got opportunities to make it easier but we didn't take them and considering that we were playing without five of our starting midfield players made it even harder for us," he said.
"We are much happier than where we were before because this victory has moved us up significantly in the standings which is good for us," Speid said.
Cavalier dominated the early proceedings and were finally rewarded when Webster latched on to a pass from Shaniel Thomas to fire home past goalkeeper Dennis Taylor.
Webster should have doubled his team's lead on the stroke of half-time but, with Taylor at his mercy, his powerful shot from 10 yards went wide of the target.
Humble Lion dominated the second period but they were let down by poor finishing from the likes of Andre Clennon, Vishinul Harris and Lorenzo Lewin.
In fact, Harris, a former Charlie Smith Manning Cup standout, should have given Humble Lion the equaliser in the 60th minute, but his right-footed effort from eight yards sailed over the crossbar. The defeat was Humble Lion's second from four matches this season.
In the opening match of the double-header, Dunbeholden also recorded a similar 1-0 win over Molynes United. Demario Phillips scored the winner for Dunbeholden in the 67th minute.
