TG’s Williams: Missed chances cost us three points
Tivoli Gardens' (TG) head coach Phillip Williams rued his side's missed chances after they played to a 1-1 draw with Montego Bay United in the Jamaica Premier League match at the UWI-JFF Captain Horace Burrell Centre of Excellence yesterday.
Ewan Barton opened the scoring for Montego Bay in the second minute before Warner Brown netted the equaliser in the 10th minute.
Williams said he was unhappy that they created so many chances but managed to convert just one.
"It is something that has been plaguing us all season. We are not clinical in front of goal," said Williams. "We created enough chances to win the game and our missed chances cost us three points.
After scoring the equaliser, Tivoli dominated the remainder of the first half, as they hit the post twice.
Kemar Flemmings thought he had given Tivoli the lead in the 20th minute but instead he crashed his curling left-footed shot against the post.
Rodico Wellington also came close a few minutes later, but his 25-yard free kick was denied by the crossbar. The west Kingston-based team, who were much quicker to the ball than their opponents throughout the match, also dominated the second period but poor finishing from the attackers let them down.
In fact, Anthony Nelson came close to getting a winner in the 80th minute but, with goalkeeper Davonnie Burton at his mercy, his shot from 10 yards went wide of the target.
Head coach of Montego Bay United, Ricky Hill, was pleased with the overall effort of his players. "However, I am disappointed at the goal that we conceded," Hill said while adding that the team had worked really hard in the days leading up to the game.
Tivoli are in 10th spot in the 12-team league with three points. Montego Bay moved up to ninth place on four points.
In the opening match of the double-header, Arnett Gardens defeated Vere United 2-1 to move up to fifth place with eight points. Vere are in 11th spot on three points.
Ronaldo Cephas in the 35th minute and Marlon Allen in the 41st minute were the scorers for Arnett. Veteran player Francois Swaby scored for Vere United in the 64th minute.
