Excelsior, STATHS locked on 12 points in Group D
Excelsior High kept pace with St Andrew Technical High (STATHS) in Group D of the ISSA Manning Cup after both schools scored contrasting wins yesterday.
The Mountain View Avenue-based Excelsior turned back third-place Bridgeport High 2-0 at Dunbeholden with goals from Richard Andrews and Dante Bert coming in each half, while STATHS drubbed Cedar Grove 7-0 for their fourth victory in four games.
Excelsior were faced with the more difficult task against third-place Bridgeport but coach Keon Brodrick said his boys did the business to set up an enticing top-of-the-table clash between the 1987 Manning Cup finalists (Excelsior and STATHS) on Saturday.
"We are thankful for the three points. This will allows us to stay close with St Andrew Technical," Brodrick told STAR Sports.
Nevertheless, he believes they could have been better in front of goal and in possession.
"We could have done much better with the chances we got. I don't think we controlled the game as best as we could but the uneven surface did not allow us to control the game as we would have liked.
"But credit must be given to the boys for the way they applied themselves. We are thankful for the points. But we will be back again on Saturday and we are expecting a tough game from STATHS," he said.
Both teams are locked on 12 points with STATHS holding the advantage with a plus 26 goal difference compared to Excelsior's plus 18.
Bridgeport are third in the group with six points while Clan Carthy High beat Tarrant High 1-0 yesterday to leave both schools tied on three points. Cedar Grove are at the bottom of the group without a point.
