A man got his foot stuck in a sinkhole after the heatwave caused the road to melt.

The 24-year-old from Newcastle was trapped from the thigh down for 20 minutes before getting freed by firefighters who resorted to using a hammer and chisel to dig him out.

A statement posted on the Fire and Rescue Service's Facebook page said: "The tarmac had become so soft during the current heatwave we are having that it melted."

A Californian pet hotel is offering dogs gourmet food, essential oil massages and pilates.

The Barkingham Pet Hotel in Palm Desert has been hailed as the luxurious alternative to the standard kennel and is said to be the animal equivalent of the Four Seasons.

The canines are treated to comfy double beds and a menu consisting of Greek yogurt parfait, "corgi cannolis" and "pumpkin and cranberry delight".

For the pets who wish to keep in shape, a gym equipped with a treadmill and pool - is on hand for them to take part in a "core strengthening and muscle conditioning program" otherwise known as "pawlates".

Speaking to Mental Floss, the owner Lori Weiner said: "We believe your pets deserve as great a vacation as you do. We pamper them the same as would a human hotel."

A number seagulls have been found drunk on beaches across the South West of England.

The birds had to be treated at local RSPCA centres after appearing to binge on waste products which contained alcohol.

RSCPA officer Jo Daniel said: "We think they're gaining access to some brewing waste products somewhere ... the birds absolutely stink of alcohol when we collect them so now our vans smell like pubs!"

David Cooper who is a vet at the animal welfare charity said the seagulls appeared "disoriented" and "confused".

He added: "We took some video of one of the birds who is staggering around and losing his balance just like a person would if they'd had too much to drink."
