Maple leaves could be used instead of Botox. Researchers in the US believe that "plant-based Botox" might be the next big trend in skincare, as compounds found in the leaf could be used as ingredients in anti-wrinkle cream.

The compounds in question are called glucitol-core-containing gallotannins, and they appear to be able to interfere with elastase, the enzyme that breaks down the protein that gives skin its youthful elasticity.

No research has been carried out on humans yet, but the results are so good that the maple syrup industry has decided to weigh in on the idea.

Nathalie Langlois, from the Federation of Maple Syrup Producers of Quebec, told CTV news: "If the maple leaf extract can indeed reduce wrinkles in humans then this could represent the potential development of value added products from the maple industry."

It is claimed women can work out income based on facial features which depend on a series of factors, such as healthier lifestyles and diets giving them a clearer complexion.

This research supports the idea of the "beauty premium" where more attractive people command higher salaries.

Researchers on this study said: "Among men, facial attractiveness significantly predicted their household income. It has been suggested that developmental sustainability associated with social class can be conveyed by facial features."

A Mexican drug lord has been arrested despite drastic weight loss and hair implants.

In a mission to evade capture from the police, 'El-Betito' the suspected head of Mexico City's Tepito Union gang - got hair implants and lost a huge amount of weight.

The 37-year-old drug leader had lost around 30 kilogrammes through gastric band surgery to reduce the size of his stomach and evade capture.

National security commissioner Renato Sales revealed that the man had been caught in the South West of Mexico City looking slimmer and with a fuller head of hair.

The local media reported his name as Roberto Moyado Esparza, and he was arrested in the Rincon del Pedregal neighbourhood carrying $10,000

(PS7,825), drugs and a handgun, and is believed to be involved in drugs and kidnapping.

His brother, who was apparently guarding him, was also detained.
