Taking yourself in hand

May 16, 2017

May is observed internationally as masturbation month, and in light of this fact, I could not let the month end without talking about the importance of self love.

For many persons, masturbation is still considered taboo, and therefore it’s not an activity that they are open to engaging in. They are very hesitant to touch themselves.

Generally, from religion to culture, the way we see masturbation is still shrouded in a lot of secrecy and shame. In addition, while it is more accepted that men masturbate, the incidents of shame are mostly aimed at women.

Women who masturbate are seen as being lonely, undesirable and nymphomaniacs. This characterisation is false because there are great benefits for women who masturbate whether or not she’s in a relationship.

Improved self confidence

Masturbation is not just about scratching an itch. It is a literal education about the body. Learning what feels good and getting familiar with the body is very good for self esteem. A person who masturbates feels more confident during sexual experience and is not afraid to communicate with their partner and participate in their own pleasure.

Better sexual experience

Being a more confident partner helps to make the sexual experience more fun for both parties. The communication is better and each partner is more satisfied overall.

Improved intimacy

Watching a partner masturbate is perhaps the most intimate experience outside of actually having sex with them. You get to learn how they like to be touched, what feels good to them and the experience itself increases the trust level between them. Pay attention to how your partner please him/herself and mimic the actions when you are together.

Health benefits

There are overall health benefits that can be gained from masturbation. It helps in stress relief, sleep, reduces pain, reduces risk of prostate cancer, and of course, it just feels really good.

I’m happy to report that there has been an increase in women expressing how masturbation has empowered them and made them more open when engaging sexually with their partners. Some have even shared that their first orgasm was achieved through self stimulation. There are some persons who believe that masturbation will make sex with a partner obsolete. As far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing to worry about there.

Sexually confident people are open and happy to share the experience with a partner. They are also confident about what they want and will express it.

Overall, masturbation has gotten a bad reputation, but it’s one of the most natural things that we can do as human beings and it helps us to understand ourselves as sexual beings even better. So go ahead, touch yourself and enjoy every minute of it.
